Pulsating lights, rainbow streamers, glitter, sick beats, live rapping, contagious energy and jaw-droppingly hot dance-offs … The very first FLYE Party: Pride Edition held last Saturday was just about everything you could imagine in an event combining fitness, dance, and community empowerment!

Eliza, our FLYE co-founder, kicked off the event with a brief introduction about the mission of the FLYE parties—to promote culture through the joy of dancing and music, in a safe, accepting space for self-expression and "letting go". And letting loose is exactly what everyone did! Holie Ebony, the master vogue artist of the Hong Kong scene, introduced the background of voguing: a style originating from LGBTQ communities in the US who found refuge in dance and music at underground clubs where they were finally free from discrimination and the chains of societal norms.

Holie led everyone through a workshop of basic vogue steps and encouraged everyone to channel their fierce inner divas in their catwalks—in voguing, she explained that "you can be anyone you want; you can be Beyonce, you can be Rihanna, you can be a supermodel"… anyone or anything you can imagine.

After the workshop, partygoers were split into small teams and given some time to come up with a unique, short routine, using the vogue moves, to perform in competition against other teams. Each team's routine thoroughly impressed the judges—every single person brought their own flair and sass to the movements they had just learned in the workshop. Team B in particular lit the dance floor on fire—even using balloons as props in the final round of battles and ultimately winning the grand prize (gorgeous bodysuits sponsored by Annibody)!

After a break, some delish bites and drinks (generously sponsored by Drinks Deli Asia), the party continued with FLYE instructors Karo and Emily and co-founder Upekha leading the crowd through some sweat-drenching, FLYE rhythmic cardio routines to songs by our fave LGBTQ artists.

The event was topped off by a freestyle dance session to a mix of different pumping FLYE mixes. It goes without saying that everyone left in an endorphin high and the biggest of smiles!

“FLYE party was a combination of fun dance, effective cardio, good time with friends and free flow of drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic). This party is different from other parties or clubbing experiences not only because we learned about the culture and background of the LGBT dance community but also because we enjoyed and were appreciated for who we were in a friendly environment of amazing FLYE instructors and students! Already looking forward to the next FLYE party!”
